Dogs are wonderful. No denying it -- dogs bring joy and unconditional love into your life. It’s been said rescue dogs seem to know that they were specifically chosen by his new parents and is getting a new “leash” on life with a loving home.

Regardless of whether you rescue a dog from a shelter or a rescue group or share your life with a breed of your choice, there is no doubt about it that dogs make our lives complete.

Because May 20 was Adopt a Rescue Dog Day (and October is Rescue Dog Month) we wanted to share our reasons why you should consider sharing your life with a rescue dog. You’ll notice many similarities between any dog you share your life with and that’s intentional!

Unconditional love. There’s a meme that reads, “dogs may not be our whole lives, but they make our lives whole” and that’s true. No matter if you’re having a bad hair day, don’t want to cook dinner, are angry because you were stuck in traffic or any number of maladies – our dogs love us no matter what. There is nothing like that feeling of unconditional love that your dog offers when he puts his head in your lap or when she climbs into your lap and snuggles in.

You’ll be more active. When you have a dog in the house, you will need to get up, get off the couch and get moving. Why? Because dogs need walks. When you have a dog, you may find yourself taking longer walks, going for hikes in the woods or hopping in the car to explore areas around your community.

You will be more social! Walking a dog means that people will toss you a smile or a wave or even a “hello, what a cute dog!” It may not be a scientific fact that dogs make people more friendly, but we can’t remember a time when we’ve been out with our dogs that someone hasn’t smiled or even stopped to talk and pet our pup.

Life will never be boring or lonely. If the coronavirus shut down taught us anything it’s that it can be lonely to be isolated from friends and family. People who shared their lives with dogs fared much better and were less lonely. You don’t need to be in a pandemic situation to love coming home to a house filled with a dog or two. They will bound to the door to greet you. Bark happily. Wiggle around when you pet them. There’s nothing better than that kind of a welcome home! We also know of people who work from home and carry on conversations with their dogs – it’s okay, you can admit it!

Whatever your reasons, sharing your life with a dog is always an adventure filled with time with your furry BFF.
